Three Years Later

“Hold still, Jacob!” Lily laughed as her two-year-old son squirmed in her arms, his tiny fingers reaching for the colorful paper lanterns swaying above their heads. “You’ll have plenty of time to cause mischief once the party starts.”

“But I wanna help, Mama!” Jacob insisted, his dark brown eyes sparkling with determination.

Jack’s deep chuckle rumbled behind her. “That boy’s got more energy than a whole herd of wild horses.” He leaned over to ruffle Jacob’s hair before turning his grin on Lily. “Why don’t you take him to see the puppies, Lil? I can finish stringing these up.”

Lily smiled, the sun’s warmth reflecting the joy in her heart. “Alright, Jacob. Let’s go find Sandy and Gus.”

Jacob let out a triumphant cheer and took off toward the barn, his little boots kicking up puffs of dust. Lily’s heart swelled as she watched him go. The ranch buzzed with life and excitement. Long tables draped in checkered cloths stood ready, covered with platters of roast beef, fresh bread, pies, and jugs of lemonade. The smell of good food mingled with the sound of neighbors arriving in wagons, laughter, and the faint strains of a fiddle tuning up.

Jack climbed down from the ladder, his sleeves rolled up and his forearms dusted with dirt. He met Lily’s gaze with a soft smile, his eyes filled with the love and quiet strength that had grown deeper over the years.

“Something on your mind, Mrs. Harlow?” he asked, wiping his hands on a rag.

“Just counting my blessings,” she said softly, stepping closer and resting a hand on his chest. “Three years ago, I never thought life could be this perfect.”

Jack leaned down and brushed a tender kiss across her forehead. “I didn’t either. But here we are.”

A burst of giggles interrupted them, and they turned to see their lively three-year-old daughter, Missy, chasing Sandy, the older terrier, with her auburn curls bouncing wildly. Jacob toddled after her, his giggles blending with hers. Gus, the younger pup, darted between their legs, barking with glee.

“She’s got your sense of adventure,” Jack remarked, watching Missy with pride.

“And Jacob’s got your stubborn streak,” Lily replied with a smile.

They stood for a moment, taking in the joyful chaos. From the porch, Jack Sr. and Andrew shared a quiet conversation, pipes in hand, the smoke curling lazily into the air. Seeing them together still surprised Lily sometimes. The man who had once been her harshest critic had worked tirelessly to redeem himself. After giving up drinking and mending his relationship with Lily, Andrew had embraced his new life in Grand Junction. Now, he was a grandfather in every sense of the word.

Andrew caught her eye and gave a small wave, his weathered face softening into a smile. Beside him, Lisa stood with her hands on her hips, surveying the preparations with a pleased look. She had been Lily’s rock, helping to raise the children and keep the house running smoothly.

“Ready for the party, Pa?” Jack called out to his father.

Jack Sr. nodded, his eyes crinkling with a smile. “Been ready for hours, son. The town’s needed a good celebration, and the Harlows are just the family to give it to ’em.”

Andrew chuckled, sending a puff of smoke into the breeze. “Ain’t that the truth. It’s good to see folks smiling again.”

Lisa clapped her hands together. “Alright, enough chatter. There’s work to do before we start celebrating.”

Jack Sr. and Andrew exchanged grins, tapping out their pipes. “Yes, ma’am,” they said in unison, earning a laugh from Lily.

The warmth of family and friendship wrapped around Lily like a comforting blanket. She looked out at the ranch, now teeming with laughter and life, and felt a surge of gratitude. This wasn’t just a party. It was a celebration of resilience, love, and the bonds that held them all together.

Jack slid an arm around her waist. “Ready to welcome the whole town, Mrs. Harlow?”

“With you by my side? Always,” she whispered, leaning into him as the first cheerful notes of the fiddle drifted through the air.

***

The sun had climbed higher in the sky, casting golden beams across the bustling ranch yard. Music floated through the air as the fiddle and banjo struck up a lively tune. Children laughed and ran underfoot while the adults gathered in groups, chatting and enjoying the food laid out on the long tables.

Lily stood by the table, helping her mother serve slices of freshly baked pie. The scent of cinnamon and apples mingled with the warm breeze. Missy raced up, her cheeks flushed and eyes sparkling.

“Mama, Papa said he’s gonna show me how to dance!” she announced, bouncing on her toes.

Lily smiled and bent down to tuck a stray curl behind Missy’s ear. “Well, I can’t wait to see that. You’ll be the belle of the ball.”

Missy grinned and dashed off to where Jack was waiting near the makeshift dance floor, his eyes shining with pride as he lifted her into his arms. He spun her around, her giggles ringing out like music, and the townsfolk clapped along to the rhythm.

Lisa turned to Lily, her face glowing with happiness. “It’s hard to believe how much has changed in just a few years. You and Jack have built a beautiful life here.”

Lily nodded, her heart swelling. “It feels like a dream sometimes, Ma. A good one.”

Andrew walked up then, his usual stoic expression softened by a rare smile. He rested a hand on Lisa’s shoulder and turned to Lily. “You’ve done well, Lily. Real well.” His voice was gruff, but there was a sincerity in his eyes that made her throat tighten.

“Thank you, Pa.” The words held a world of meaning. His hard-won redemption had brought them closer, and she finally felt the peace she had longed for.

Jack Sr. joined them, a twinkle in his eye. “Come on, Andrew. Let’s leave these ladies to their pies and see if we can’t find a couple of rocking chairs to occupy.”

Andrew chuckled. “Sounds like a fine idea.”

As the two older men wandered off, Jack caught Lily’s eye and gestured for her to join him. He held out his hand, his smile inviting. She stepped forward, her heart fluttering just as it had when they’d first agreed to their partnership.

“Care to dance, Mrs. Harlow?” he asked, his voice low and warm.

“I thought you’d never ask,” she teased, slipping her hand into his.

They danced in contented silence, the weight of their journey finally giving way to the joy of the present. When the song ended, Jack leaned in, his forehead resting against hers.

“I don’t know when it happened, Lil, but I fell in love with you. And I’ll love you forever.”

Tears shimmered in her eyes. “I’ve loved you from the moment I realized we could be a team. And now, I can’t imagine life without you.”

They kissed gently, the world fading away until there was just the two of them and the promise of forever.

  2. Not surprise once again I absolutely loved the story. Well written plot with enough suspense to keep the story going. Loved the characters the world building was great. If you want my two cents ( or.two gold coins) read A Bride’s Deal For Love.

  3. I have a new favorite author! Beautiful story, beautifully written. All the required elements of the Mail Order Bride/Old Western Romance genre, but written with the skills and in the style of a more mainstream author. She fills the pages with creative imagery without the endless “filler” of detailed descriptions of wardrobe and hair styles: all beef, not just a sandwich. Enjoy!

    1. Thank you so much for your thoughtful and generous words! It truly means the world to hear that the story resonated with you. I’m especially glad you appreciated the balance between rich storytelling and pacing—your “all beef, not just a sandwich” comment made my day! I’m honored to be counted among your favorite authors, and I hope the next story brings you just as much enjoyment. 🤠📚❤️
